  • Up to 5 metres of surface-mounted cabling from consumer unit to charger (measured along the cable route)
  • One masonry wall penetration with tidy clipping or trunking where appropriate
  • Mounting, wiring & commissioning of your chosen charger, with functional tests at handover
  • Safe electrical connection to a suitable spare way in your consumer unit; RCD/RCBO and SPD confirmed/provided as required

Extras & when they apply

If your property needs more than the standard scope, we’ll flag it clearly and price it before work starts — no hidden surprises. Photos or a quick video of your consumer unit, proposed charger location and cable route help us quote accurately first time.

Common extras

  • Cable distance over 5m or non-standard routing (loft, garage, outbuilding, garden runs)
  • Additional drilling, ducting or minor groundworks to reach the parking spot
  • Consumer unit changes (no spare ways, SPD requirement, specific RCD/RCBO types)
  • 4G connectivity kit where driveway Wi-Fi is weak
  • Pedestal/mounting post where a wall mount isn’t suitable

Situations that usually need a chat first

  • Three-phase supplies or planned upgrades
  • Leasehold/landlord permissions or shared/remote parking bays
  • Long external runs requiring SWA/trenching

Smart charging & off-peak tariffs

Smart charging saves money by shifting most charging into cheaper night windows and avoiding the evening peak. We’ll pair your app properly, set schedules, and configure sensible limits so the charger plays nicely with the rest of your home.

  • App pairing & account linking (Ohme, Easee, Hypervolt, Zappi)
  • Schedule setup optimised for Octopus Intelligent Go and similar off-peak tariffs
  • Load settings to protect your main fuse and avoid nuisance trips
  • Connectivity check and options for a 4G kit if driveway Wi-Fi is unreliable (extra)

Solar-ready options & home energy

If you’ve got solar PV (or plan to add it), we’ll specify hardware that makes the most of your generation and storage. The aim is simple: use your cheap or self-generated energy first, without your charger fighting the battery.

  • Zappi eco modes to prioritise surplus solar and limit grid import
  • Ohme, Easee & Hypervolt — excellent with time-of-use tariffs and usage insights
  • Battery coordination so EV charging complements rather than conflicts with your home storage system
  • Future-proof routing so cable runs and comms are ready for upgrades

All installs follow UK Smart Charging Regulations with appropriate load management and PEN fault protection.

FAQs — quick answers

What counts as a standard install in Reading (and why is 5m included)?

Our standard install includes a neat surface-mounted run up to 5 metres from your consumer unit to the charger, one masonry penetration, mounting, commissioning, app setup and safety checks. Beyond 5m or more complex routing is priced as an extra so you only pay for what you need.

My home is terraced/on-street — can I still charge?

If you don’t have off-street parking, there are pathways to explore. Some residents use council-permitted cable channels to route a cable safely across the pavement; others rely on nearby public charging. Permissions, safety and local rules apply — tell us about your set-up and we’ll explain options and considerations in plain English.

How long does installation take on the day?

Most straightforward installs take 2–4 hours. Longer runs, board upgrades or groundworks can extend this — we’ll confirm timings in advance so you can plan your day.

Do you set up Octopus Intelligent Go for me?

Yes — we’ll pair the charger, build overnight schedules and show you how to target the cheap window without over-charging. Where supported we’ll also set charge caps and departure times.

How do you handle load balancing and PEN fault protection?

We install in line with UK Smart Charging Regulations, using built-in or external load management and ensuring PEN fault protection. We test and document the installation at handover for your records.

Tethered vs untethered — which suits Reading homes?

Tethered keeps the cable ready on the wall (grab-and-go). Untethered looks cleaner and uses a separate lead from the boot. The right choice depends on driveway layout, visibility from the street and how often you charge.

What if Wi-Fi is weak on my driveway?

We’ll try optimal placement and pairing first. If signal remains unreliable, a 4G connectivity kit (extra) keeps your charger smart for tariffs, updates and remote support.

Do I need 22kW three-phase at home?

Most UK homes are single-phase and charge at up to 7.4kW, which is ideal for overnight top-ups. If you already have three-phase (or plan to add it), we’ll recommend suitable hardware and settings.
